Moldovan government's policy opens new prospects in relation with EU

The government's policy opens up new prospects in Moldova's relations with the European Union. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said this at a today's meeting with Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu, the parliament's mass media relations department has said.

The meeting, which was attended by the European Union's Troika as well, was held in the context of the Swedish EU Presidency. Carl Bildt specified that the goal of the visit to Chisinau by the EU delegation is to establish the next steps in Moldova's relations with the European Union. We are interested in ensuring a stable political environment which would be friendly to reforms in Moldova, the Swedish foreign minister said.

Mihai Ghimpu said that the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AIE) aims at democratizing Moldova, overcoming the social and economic crisis and integrating into the European Union. The AIE fully supports the new government's action programme. The speaker said that the successful implementation of democratic reforms and Moldova's economic development can be hardly achieved without domestic political stability and without financial assistance from abroad. Therefore, emphasis will be laid on the attraction of foreign investments. Mihai Ghimpu thanked Sweden for support, and urged Swedish business people to actively invest in Moldova's economy.

We will implement projects within the Eastern Partnership, but the Moldovan citizens' will is to integrate in the great European family as soon as possible, the parliament speaker specified. Therefore, we advocate Moldova's inclusion in the package of the Western Balkans and the Moldovan citizens' free movement in the EU. Carl Bildt said that the EU is willing to start negotiations on an association agreement with Moldova.

The parliament speaker voiced hope that the MPs will manage to elect Moldova's president, thus completing the process of state power's formation and ensuring political stability.

Besides the social and economic crisis, Moldova also faces the Transnistrian issue, on the settlement of which Moldova's political stability depends too, Mihai Ghimpu said. The speaker asked for support from the EU and the USA to settle the Transnistrian conflict. At the same time, the officials said that Moldova's sustainable economic development will also be in favour of this conflict's settlement. Carl Bildt reiterated the European Union's position of backing Moldova's territorial integrity and the need to resume negotiations in the 5+2 format.
